The investigation into the fire that destroyed Die Poskantoor Restaurant in Constantia Park is ongoing, and the cause and motive remain unknown.
Tshwane district police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk had not provided an update on the SAPS's investigation into the disastrous fire at the time of going for print.
The devastating fire broke out at a business outlet in Pretoria East on Sunday morning, leaving the establishment in ruin.
Spokesperson for Tshwane's Emergency Services Department, Lindsay Mnguni, said firefighters from Hazelwood, Erasmuskloof, and Silverton fire stations promptly responded to the scene after receiving the emergency call.
Firefighting resources, which included three fire engines, a water carrier, a water tanker, a mobile command unit and a district commander’s unit were also made available to assist in putting out the blaze.
Mnguni said: “On arrival, the firefighters found that the building was fully involved and well alight. They immediately began with firefighting operations, which also included protecting other nearby exposed structures, and ensuring that everyone was accounted for.”
He said animals in a pet shop were safely protected during the operations and the shopping centre also remained unaffected by the intense heat of the fire.
“The fire was swiftly brought under control. Firefighting operations continued until the fire was fully extinguished at about 05:55 am,” he said.
No injuries were reported and the cause of fire is still to be determined, according to Mnguni.
He said the SAPS officers and other private safety and security organisations were also present on the scene.
Mnguni informed the public that to report any fire or rescue emergency, they should call 107 toll-free or alternatively 012 358 6300/6400.
“When reporting an emergency, please remain calm; speak clearly; know where you are to give the correct address; give your correct contact number to allow the operator to phone you back should he or she require you to do so,” he said.
