As South Africa commemorates Women’s Month, the contributions of women in health care are being recognised and celebrated.
Laundry services supervisor at Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria, Masindi Xaba, is an exemplary model of determination and hard work.
Her journey from an ordinary worker to a supervisor is testament to the value of skills development training.
She said her career in laundry services began in 2002 as a volunteer at Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital, also in the city.
“I was later employed on a permanent contract in 2004 and spent 10 years honing my skills,” she said.
She added that in 2015, she got her current position at Steve Biko Academic Hospital, where she oversees the provision of adequate, clean, and constant linen supplies to ensure improved hygiene and continued healthcare services.
The 50-year-old from Soshanguve attributes her success to the Department of Health’s empowerment through managerial and technical skills training.
“Traditionally, supervisors and managers in our laundry were men. However, after undergoing training, I am now a supervisor,” she said.
Xaba’s promotion is a significant milestone, breaking gender barriers in a traditionally male-dominated field.
Xaba’s role extends beyond the laundry room – she plays a critical role in ensuring that young employees under her supervision are level headed and refers them to the hospital’s employee health and wellness programme when needed.
“My leadership style is characterised by empathy, guidance, and mentorship. As a single mother of three, I believe in empowering women to advance themselves.”
She said she aims to open her own laundry service business, rendering services to hospitals and companies.
Her entrepreneurial spirit and vision for the future are inspiring, demonstrating the potential for growth and development in the healthcare sector.
Xaba’s dedication to her work and patients is evident in her commitment to ensuring adequate linen supplies.
"I always make sure the hospital has enough linen to ensure services continue as normal. It’s about putting patients first," she added.
Xaba added that her patient-centred approach is a testament to the hospital's values and mission.
