Cape Town - There were smiles all around when the Government Employees Medical Scheme (GEMS) donated R1 million to Groote Schuur Hospital's (GSH) Maternal Fetal Medicine Unit in support of 16 Days of Activism.

The unit, a referral centre for highrisk pregnancies, faces high complications and adverse pregnancy outcomes. This donation will enhance GSH's ability to provide critical care to mothers and newborns in need.

Dr. Nomzamo Tutu, Chairperson of GEMS Medical Aid, highlighted Groote Schuur's long-standing role in South Africa's healthcare system.

“Groote Schuur is a beacon of excellence in the healthcare system. It's been here for decades, and its reputation for excellence cannot be overstated,” she said.

Dr. Tutu expressed GEMS's desire to “step up” for the hospital, noting the importance of quick, accurate diagnoses in high-risk pregnancies.

“Every second counts, and with this donation, we help healthcare professionals make earlier diagnoses, ensuring every newborn is welcomed with comfort and dignity.”

She further emphasised that the donation's impact would extend beyond the hospital walls.

“This isn't just about infrastructure or equipment; it's about ensuring healthcare professionals have the tools to make a difference. We want to have an impact that goes beyond private beneficiaries and truly benefits the community.”

Inkosi Mzamo Buthelezi, Minister of Public Service and Administration, spoke passionately about the significance of the donation, particularly during 16 Days of Activism, which focuses on violence against women and children.

“Those who decide to join earth are first welcomed by your hands. If care fails from your hands, there is no future,” he said.

He praised Groote Schuur as a pillar of healthcare excellence and described the donation as “more than just tools of the trade – it is a lifeline for our newborns and a message of hope”.

Buthelezi also underscored the value of public-private partnerships in healthcare.

“This partnership is an example of how we can bridge gaps and expand capacity to serve. Investing in maternal healthcare is investing in the future of our country,” he added.

Dr. Jayshina Punwasi, Chief Operations Manager at Groote Schuur, reflected on the hospital's deep connection to the community.

“Groote Schuur is not just a hospital; it's a cornerstone of the community. People are born, treated, and live their healthcare journeys here,” she said.

She emphasised that the donation would help support the entire patient journey, from antenatal to adolescent care.

“We look forward to many more partnerships that will strengthen our ability to serve with compassion and dignity.”

Dr. Sadia Murray, Medical Manager at Groote Schuur, echoed these sentiments, stressing that the Maternal Fetal Medicine Unit is vital for women with high-risk pregnancies.

“At the heart of our mission is to serve women and children with dignity,” she said.

The donation will fund essential equipment, including five incubators, ultrasound machines, and other critical tools.

Kristy Evans, Director of the Groote Schuur Hospital Trust, explained the impact across four key areas: women's health, adolescent care, medical and surgical care, and facility upgrades.

“This contribution will benefit all these areas and is especially meaningful during 16 Days of Activism,” she said, highlighting the vulnerability of second-trimester women to issues like domestic violence.”

Buthelezi summed up the significance of the donation by saying: “The healthcare professionals here are the heartbeat of our system. Let this moment inspire us all to build the character of who we are as a nation. GEMS's commitment today is a lifetime promise to South Africa.”
