Cape Town - An opportunity to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those who lost the battle and to educate the community about cancer will take place later today.

The Cansa Relay for Life along with Century City Athletics Club will host the Cape Town Purple Walk of Hope this evening.

Funds raised from the event will go towards Cansa's patient care services and there will be live entertainment.

Chairman of Century City Athletics Club Bertie Cloete said it is wonderful to be part of the initiative.

“We as a club are honoured to be able to partner with Cansa. They are doing amazing work and giving much needed support to the cancer-affected community. They fulfil such an important role and it is a privilege to be able to help Cansa with the fight against this disease.

“I have been affected personally by cancer. I lost my dad last year, other family members and friends. This brought the reality of this disease home. The helpless feeling of not being able to help your loved one. It also made us aware about the role Cansa plays. That's why over the years we have been supporting them in many ways.”

Lloyd Louw, who will be taking part in the walk, said he is a cancer survivor and lost his youngest sister five months ago.

“My wife and I will be supporting the walk to remember my sister and my father-in-law who also battled cancer. We support and are very encouraged by the work Cansa is doing,” he said.

Cansa sustainability co-ordinator Fadwa Walker said: “It is important for us to celebrate our cancer survivors and that's why at every event our survivors open the event by doing a lap around the field as a testament to their strength. They are our VIP guests of the evening and we honour their journeys.

“Cancer education is important because it helps us save lives through early detection and prevention,” she said.
