Hundreds of people gathered in Sea Point on Saturday afternoon for the Regent Road Precinct Festival in celebration of Heritage Day.

Small businesses, restaurants, galleries and even hotels brought their businesses to the street, to partake in the festival.

Two music stages were set up on each end of the road, which was cordoned off to traffic, and selected stores had a DJ set-up to entertain the crowds.

And as far as the eye could see, the street was packed with revellers celebrating, dancing to live music and others dressed in traditional clothes to mark their culture.

Artist Murray Cowen spent most of the day completing a mural on the side of Bootlegger cafe on Regent Road.

Cowen, who has been a mural artist for the last 12 years, painted a mural consisting of abstract foliage merging into a butterfly.

“I love that I get to contribute to the vibe of the day. I love that children get to see this happen as it’s not something they see daily,” he said.

“Something like this can take six to eight hours and I typically complete my murals in a day,” he added.

Gelato store Moro Gelato brought their tables onto Regent Road so customers could enjoy the festivities while indulging in sweet treats.

The store’s assistant manager Siphesihle Maziya said they were thrilled to participate in the festivities.

“Today, we are serving customers and ensuring that everyone is enjoying the day and soaking up the vibe,” she said.

“We love interacting with customers and offer our service as best we can,” she continued.

Marimba band Ilitha Lelanga performed at the festival with its artists clad in cultural attire. The band’s leader Zama Mquolo said they were grateful for the opportunity to partake in the day’s festivities.

“This is great exposure for the band and we get to bring our talents to this part of Cape Town,” he said.
