London - Four in ten families feel holiday companies’ websites and brochures were misleading about their holiday hotel or resort, a study found.

Among them, 28 percent said the location was not as described and one in seven said “awful” surroundings appear to have been cropped out of photographs.

Half said the hotel’s facilities did not match the description, and one in six said there was undeclared building work going on.

Around four in ten disagreed with the star rating.

The research, by website GoCompare, asked 1 400 people about their holiday experiences over the past five years.

Four in ten said their rooms were nothing like the photos – but only 11 percent complained and managed to get an upgrade when confronted by shabby accommodation or broken showers.

About eight percent complained directly to the holiday company and received a refund.

GoCompare’s Alex Edwards said: “People who spend hundreds if not thousands of pounds to get away for a few weeks abroad should be confident that what they see in the brochure is what they get at a resort.”
