Actor Aubrey Poo shares his travel secrets.
First holiday memory?
Cape Town! I travel a lot with work and I don’t consider those trips to be holidays.
Favourite place in South Africa?
Cape Town (yet again). I think it has all the hallmarks of most international coast-holiday cities.
Best holiday?
My first holiday in Cape Town. I suppose the sense of not having to think about work and early mornings. The fun thing about holidaying in Cape Town is that a lot of friends are there, so one can share memories with more than just one’s partner.
What have you learnt from your travels?
The importance of travel. It expands your horizons and adds to your world view.
Beach bum, culture vulture or adrenalin junkie?
All the above, depending on destination and company.
Greatest travel luxury?
I haven’t flown business class or first class on a long trip out of the country and that’s on my bucket list of luxuries I want to enjoy when travelling.
Holiday reading?
I read scripts and memorise lines for a living. I don’t want to read for leisure on holiday (and then he hides).
Which place has seduced you?
Mallorca – one of the Balearic Islands (in the Mediterranean). I fell in love with the idea of a holiday island over the European summer season. The long days are also something to marvel at.
Worst travel experience?
A hint of racism anywhere in the world would rub me up the wrong way. I just got bad service from the moment I sat down in a restaurant in Munich. It felt as though the waiter wasn’t keen on serving me. But, then again, I could be wrong. It could be an isolated incident…
Best hotel?
I enjoy self-catering apartments. Hotels feel small and don’t allow me to live in my own space as I would at home. The Pepper Club in Cape Town is up there with the best of them.
Favourite walk, swim, ride or drive?
A bike ride around Munich.
Best meal abroad?
Clam chowder on a cold day, anywhere in the USA.
Favourite city?
Joburg, Cape Town and Manhattan. In that order. I can’t pick one. I love all three of them
Where to next?
Well… I’m in Cape Town for a while, so I guess I’ll be on a mission to enjoy this city as much as I can given the hectic theatre schedule.
