London - Scientists claim to have discovered what’s needed to turn holiday moments into lifelong memories.

The top three motors of a magical getaway are company (22 percent), time (17 percent), and location (15 percent).

Activities, uniqueness, sounds, weather, sights, smells and tastes also feature strongly as important contributors to how wonderful a holiday can be.

The study was commissioned by lastminute.com and conducted with neuro-psychologist Dr David Lewis and Mindlab International, using in-lab research and online interviews with 6 000 Europeans.

The research found men and women remember different special moments.

Men recall immediate and sensual details such as sights and sounds, noting birdsong and music as some of the small but important details. Women place much more emphasis on features like location and what they’re up to at the time.

About 34 percent of Brits’ most treasured lifetime memories relate to travel experiences, showing just how important holidays are long after they are over.

Dr Lewis said: “People are key in creating memories. It’s important to invest in creating treasured memories so you can tap into them when you need a pick-me-up.”
