London - Middle-aged travellers are shunning traditional beach holidays and the annual cruise for more adventurous, long-haul trips.

Having paid off the mortgage and the children having long flown from the nest, the over-50s are heading for more exotic destinations.

And with people staying fitter and healthier for longer, they are opting to go skiing, climbing or on a safari ahead lounging by the pool.

Saga Holiday has added more active packages to destinations such as Burma, Uzbekistan and New Zealand for its over-50s to keep up with demands.
