Durban - Durban Tourism is planning “to take the city to the world” and showcase what it has to offer in Trafalgar Square in London and Times Square in New York.

“Instead of going to the World Travel Market (one of the biggest trade shows in the world) in London and sitting behind a desk waiting for someone to ask for a brochure, we are going to have a big event in Trafalgar Square,” Dumi Mbatha, Durban Tourism’s marketing manager, told members of Sapphire Coast Toti Tourism on Friday.

She said later that possibly such “activations” at Trafalgar Square and Times Square would involve having a mini promenade of Durban, a replica of Moses Mabhida Stadium, art and photographic exhibitions, typical cuisine and local culture groups doing performances.

Local tourism product owners could also talk about their businesses. “This would give people an experience even before they get here. It will be better than handing out brochures,” she said.

Durban Tourism would probably have to work with SA Tourism on the ideas.

The plan is part of Durban Tourism’s new seven-year strategy and has to be officially approved.

It was all about raising brand awareness about Durban, which was not well known internationally, she said. Durban was recognised as a beach destination in South Africa, but not internationally. - Daily News
