As the festive season approaches, many South Africans are turning to the charm of small towns for a unique holiday experience.

These dorpies offer a peaceful escape from bustling cities and crowded coastal hotspots.

Here's a guide to some of South Africa's best small towns for a magical Christmas getaway.

Clarens: A Festive gem in the Eastern Free State

Tucked in the Maluti Mountains, Clarens, known as the "Jewel of the Eastern Free State," combines natural beauty with festive cheer.

On 14 December, the Maluti Market on the Square comes alive with handmade crafts and local goods, perfect for last-minute Christmas shopping.

On 23 December, the NG Church hosts a traditional carol service, adding a touch of holiday spirit.

Beyond the festivities, Clarens offers outdoor adventures.

Explore hiking trails in the Clarens Nature Reserve or try abseiling and whitewater rafting with Clarens Xtreme. For wildlife enthusiasts, Golden Gate Highlands National Park, just 20 minutes away, provides scenic trails and breathtaking views.

Parys: Riverside festivities and local markets

Situated along the Vaal River, Parys blends history with summer activities.

The monthly Hartelus Mark, held next to the river bridge, is a family-friendly highlight. For just R10 entry (free for children under 10 and seniors over 70), visitors can enjoy local crafts, food, and entertainment.

Parys offers river-based activities such as kayaking, swimming, and boat cruises, alongside antique shops and art galleries for a leisurely day out. It’s the ideal mix of relaxation and exploration.

Stellenbosch: A winelands wonderland

The Cape Winelands town of Stellenbosch transforms into a summer playground with its "Stay and Play Summer" offers running until March 2025. Visitors can enjoy special deals on boutique stays, wine farm tours, and more.

The newly launched Art Mile provides a unique way to explore the town’s creative scene, while families can head to Wonderdal Edutainment Centre for interactive activities.

For a classic summer outing, enjoy a picnic among vineyards or attend the lively Street Soirees featuring local cuisine, wine, and music.

Dwarsrivier Valley: A hidden treasure

Just a short drive from Stellenbosch over Helshoogte Pass lies the serene Dwarsrivier Valley, home to small villages like Pniël and Kylemore.

This area offers cultural walking tours, homestays, and stunning vineyard views.

Visitors can savour Christmas lunch at Alluvia Boutique Winery or take part in a wine walk, embracing the festive season with a toast to local vintages.

Graaff-Reinet: Karoo Christmas charm

Known as the "Gem of the Karoo," Graaff-Reinet buzzes with festive energy. Highlights include carol services at the historic NG Kerk and performances by Coenie de Villiers and Jannie du Toit at the John Rupert Theatre.

On 14 December, the Karoo Lamb Champs on Somerset Street offers a feast of local lamb, live music, and holiday cheer. Between events, visitors can explore Cape Dutch architecture or take a drive to the Valley of Desolation for stunning views.

Johannesburg: An urban festive retreat

Surprisingly, Johannesburg offers a quieter, more enjoyable festive experience as crowds head to the coast.

The city’s theatres host shows like Disney: The Magic Box and A Christmas Carol, while the Drakensberg Boys Choir brings their Noël Tour to town.

Restaurants across the city serve special Christmas menus, making it easy to enjoy family feasts without the hassle of cooking.

Flight Centre South Africa's GM Antoinette Turner says; "These dorpies provide a more relaxed pace away from peak-season city and coastal crowds, where families can truly connect. Kids can safely explore, parents can unwind, and service is more personal."

Whether you're seeking riverside relaxation, Winelands indulgence, or Karoo hospitality, there’s a dorpie waiting to make your holiday unforgettable.
