Meadowlands Technical High School together with the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA) will host a junior Motor Mechanical competition on September 14 at the school premises in Montford, Chatsworth.
Pupils will be given a chance to compete for the Junior Motor Mech title 2024.
The competition intends to nurture local talent with the motor mechanic and greater automotive industry. It also aims to churn much-needed skills lacking in today’s youth that could improve the levels of employment, explained Meadowlands principal SV Naidoo.
“We at Meadowlands Technical High School are inordinately proud to host this momentous and empowering event. This will undoubtedly foster an interest among our young learners to pursue a career in the automotive industry," Naidoo said.
In addition to the Junior Motor Mech competition, there will be a variety of new and classic cars on display. There will also be a grand show and shine and sound-off competition.
"This event is being billed as a much-anticipated social highlight in the community and will cater to every member of the family and not just car enthusiasts. There will be a kiddies play and entertainment area and a variety of stalls with delectable food and drinks as well as glitz, glamour and roaring engines.
"Industry displays will also showcase the latest in automotive technology and services from leading workshops. There will also be lucky draws with some incredible prizes throughout the event."
Entry is free. The event will start at 9.30am and will end at 5.30pm.
Previous editions of the Motor Mech competition were held in Worcester, in the Western Cape, and Kariega in East London.
The Eastern Cape version was held at the Daniel Pienaar Technical High School where 20 pupils, representing five different Eastern Cape schools, battled for a podium finish, according to MIWA.
The final eight finalists competed in five different stations. Tjaart van der Walt from Port Rex Technical High School emerged victorious.
