THIRTY THREE people were arrested for their connection with the fraudulent issuing of drivers licenses at the Melmoth Driving License Centre under Mthonjaneni Local Municipality.
The Department of Transport and Human Settlements said that the permits of all those arrested have been revoked.
Ndabezinhle Sibiya Spokesperson for the department in KwaZulu-Natal confirmed that the 30 suspects will appear before the Richards Bay Magistrate Court.
Sibiya said the crackdown was a result of the efforts by the Hawks, NPA and Traffic and Transport Inspection Unit.
“30 people will appear in the Richards Bay Magistrate Court following their arrest in connection with the fraudulent issuing of driver's licenses for R2, 500.
“This occurred at the Melmoth Driving License Centre under Mthonjaneni Local Municipality. Initially, the department’s traffic and transport inspection unit, together with the Hawks arrested nine people—two examiners and ten license applicants who benefited. The number has since increased to thirty (30),
“Our message is that fake drivers who underwent fake driving tests will be removed from our roads, arrested, and locked up in jail. We do this in order to end carnage on our roads and to save innocent lives,” Sibiya said.
