At just 13 years old, Tanesha Ramphal is on a mission to fuse her Hindi roots with the sounds of Western classics.

From “Radha on the Dance Floor” to Snoop Dogg’sDrop It Like It’s Hot”, this teenage DJ has a masterful way of mixing music.

The Grade 8 pupil at Queensburgh Girls’ High School hails from Kharwastan, Chatsworth. She began her career at the age of 12.

“Watching other DJs mix music really fascinated me.”

She said she enjoys mixing R&B, pop, hip hop and bhangra.

Tanesha, who goes by the stage name of DJ Tish, said she is grateful that her passion for DJ’ing has already made her a young entrepreneur.

“I play at car show events, birthday parties, engagement parties, weddings and charity shows.

“I get a pretty awesome salary from these gigs, which is really cool.”

Tanesha said she is grateful for the support she gets from her family and friends.

“I have the best family in the world for allowing me to pursue my dreams at such a young age.”

She credited her parents for motivating her to improve her skill set and never settle. This, she said, is the reason why she is now learning how to produce her own music.

Tanesha said being a young DJ is an incredible feeling.

"It’s always fun to watch the crowds respond when I’m changing beats.

“Being a DJ allows me to be in my own space and in my own world.”

She also said it’s important for women to make their mark in whatever industry they choose to be in.

“At this point, I feel like men and women are equal now, so I'm just grateful to be in this industry.”

Tanesha gave some advice for young aspiring entrepreneurs who wish to go after their dreams.

“You have to have a balance between your schoolwork and hobbies.

"You should always believe in yourself. Believe that you are getting better each day.

“Always practise. Failing is part of the journey. You should see failure as an opportunity to grow your talent,” she said.

The multi-talented rising star also has a passion for hockey and would like to become a professional hockey player one day as well.

Her upcoming gig is the Grosvenor Boys' High School car show on August 13.
