DOLPHIN lovers and uShaka Marine World are mourning the untimely passing of the sea world’s youngest dolphin, Khethiwe, who died last night.

While her cause of death was yet to be determined, marine experts said they would have a better understanding of how Khethiwe died once a full necropsy was carried out today.

Khethiwe would have turned 16 on November 25, and was the daughter of Gambit and Frodo. Gambit was one of the oldest dolphins to ever be documented and he died at the age of 48 in 2020.

Khethiwe, whose name means "the chosen one", was described by her human family at Ushaka Marine World as an energetic dolphin.

Dr Larry Oellermann, chief executive officer of the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR), said: “Khethiwe had a special place in all our hearts. Since her death, the SAAMBR team has been inconsolable and my heart goes out to my colleagues who were present at her birth, and now have had to say goodbye too soon. Thank you for keeping us in your thoughts as we navigate the difficult road ahead."

Khethiwe, whose name means "the chosen one" was described by her human family at Ushaka Marine World as an energetic dolphin, who loved receiving attention from the trainers and the other dolphins in her group.

"As the youngest in the family, she received a lot of attention from her older sisters, Affrika, Tombi, Zulu and Khanya, who abhor her boundless energy and mischievous antics. She was particularly attached to her older sister Affrika," said Oellermann, who added that Khethiwe stole the show at any given opportunity.

As is customary when one of the seals or dolphins celebrate their birthdays, a bespoke birthday cake made with love, gelatin and ice was created in Khethiwe’s honour each year.

On the SAAMBR Facebook page, tributes poured in for Khethiwe.

Sussane Moodley: “Khethiwe was such a happy little spark and she will be fondly remembered. May her dolphin soul attain peace and joy in the heavenly world of waters.”

“This is devastating. We went for her birthday last year. So sad,” wrote Naseera Shaikh.

Neethie Joseph: “Heartfelt condolences to the caring staff at UShaka Marine World. A difficult job at a difficult time.”

“This is too sad. Such devastating news. Condolences to all who worked with her,” added Nan Govender.
