A NEWLANDS WEST man who threatened to kill and skin a businessman’s family alive and bomb a mall in uMhlanga will be sent to a district surgeon for a mental assessment.

Divaker Ramchuran, 25, was arrested by officers from the Durban North SAPS at his home in Bakerville Gardens last Wednesday.

According to a police source, the officers swooped on Ramchuran after tracking him through his social media accounts.

“When police arrived at his home they apprehended him and searched the house for bombs and explosives. His electronic devices were confiscated.”

Ramchuran has now been charged with intimidation and extortion.

The threats were allegedly made against Vishal Maharaj, the chief executive officer of Megazone Radio.

Ramchuran made his first appearance in the Durban Magistrate’s Court last Friday.

State Prosecutor Calvin Govender told the court that Ramchuran was facing two counts of intimidation.

“The accused (Ramchuran) demanded Vishal Maharaj to sign over his assets.”

Govender said in relation to the charge of extortion, Ramchuran inspired fear on his X account where he threatened to kill Maharaj, skin and rape his family.

“The accused also threatened to bomb the uMhlanga mall.”

The court ordered that Ramchuran be remanded in custody and assessed by a district surgeon. The matter has been adjourned to later this week.

Ramchuran’s family, who were in court, did comment by the time of publication.
