PUPILS from Vukani, Lekang and Hoernle primary schools played their part in raising HIV/Aids awareness and reducing the stigma attached to the disease.
Yesterday, the Government Communication and Information Systems and the Ipelegeng Community Centre invited the schools to present songs, dances and dramas that highlighted HIV/Aids at the centre in White City Jabavu, Soweto.
The theme for the day was Getting to Zero – South Africa is Taking Responsibility. The day was also in support of the 16 Days of Activism Against Woman and Child Abuse.
Hoernle Primary’s life orientation teacher, Mavuso Zimba, said that it was important to teach the children while they were still young.
“They have to know now what it means to take care of their bodies. They have to be able to teach their families at home about it as well,” he said.
Mandla Dlamini, from the Mamohau Motshehetsi Community Care and Support Centre, took time to speak to the eager pupils.
“Does anyone know how people are supposed to protect themselves from the virus?” he asked.
“You have to wear a coat for old people,” said one Grade 4 boy.
