AT least three cars are reported stolen each day in Orlando – and most of the thefts occur because of negligence.
This was the warning during yesterday’s theft of motor vehicle awareness campaign by the Orlando East police in Dube and Pennyville. The police, joined by community police forum (CPF) members and street patrollers, moved through the streets urging residents to be vigilant against hijackings.
“People park their vehicles in deserted areas without any security. We want people to be alert everywhere they go,” said police spokeswoman Captain Nomvula Mbense.
Greater Orlando CPF general secretary Phindile Senya said many residents left their cars unlocked without any form of security. “It’s important that they take precautionary measures to help us fight this crime,” she said.
Lebogang Khumalo from Pennyville said car theft was rife, but the scourge had decreased in the past two years. She attributed this to private security companies patrolling the area and residents joining forces to fight the problem.
Motorists were given pamphlets with tips on how to avoid car thefts, hijacking, break-ins and smash-and-grabs. Some of the safety tips included:
l Keep doors locked at all times.
l If the vehicle is equipped with anti-theft devices such as a gear lock, steering lock or alarm, always use or activate them when parked.
l Park your car where there is sufficient light.
l Avoid leaving valuables in the car.
