The University of South Africa (Unisa) has announced the re-appointment of Professor Puleng LenkaBula as its Principal and Vice-Chancellor, a decision that reflects the institution’s confidence in her leadership and vision for the future.
Following a council sitting on December 9, 2024, Prof LenkaBula will begin her second term on January 1, 2026, poised to lead the university into a new era of academic excellence and innovation.
This significant decision comes on the heels of a recent review of her first term, which began in January 2021, making her the first woman to occupy this prestigious position in the university's nearly 150-year history.
The review process, described by Dr Dan Mosia, Chairperson of the Unisa Council, as “robust, rigorous, and fair,” ultimately led to a unanimous decision to reaffirm her appointment in accordance with the Higher Education Act 101 of 1997.
Under Prof LenkaBula’s stewardship, Unisa has experienced remarkable transformations. Commenting on her tenure, Dr Mosia highlighted key achievements including significant advancements in the university’s research output, teaching and learning methodologies, and improved academic rankings.
Notably, the university has also seen an increase in international partnerships and a higher level of commitment from its academic and support staff.
“Council reaffirms its confidence in the leadership of Professor LenkaBula. She has been instrumental in fostering sustainable growth and stability at the institution and is ideally positioned to lead Unisa into its next chapter of growth and innovation,” Mosia stated, emphasising the critical role of leadership in an evolving educational landscape.
In reaction to her reappointment, Prof LenkaBula expressed her gratitude, stating, “I am deeply honoured and appreciative of the confidence expressed by the University Council in me. My commitment, along with the University’s management, is to advance our mission of Shaping Africa’s Intellectual Futures and to continue creating opportunities for students and staff alike to succeed.”
