What started as a routine patrol in Silverton quickly turned into a breakthrough for police officers who apprehended four suspects found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Captain Johan Van Dyk, spokesperson for the Tshwane District Police, reported that on Wednesday, during routine patrols in the Silverton area, members of the SAPS K9 Unit observed a suspicious white Ford Ranger double-cab bakkie with four male occupants traveling along Petroleum Road in Waltloo.

He added that a radio communication check revealed the vehicle had no registered owner.

“Acting on their instincts, the officers conducted a vehicle check via radio communication and found that the vehicle had no registered owner. The officers immediately stopped the vehicle and, following tactical procedures, ordered the occupants to exit and lie on the ground.”

Van Dyk revealed that during a thorough search of the vehicle, officers made a startling discovery— a pistol with six rounds of ammunition hidden under the rear seats.

“Upon searching the vehicle, the officers discovered a Glock pistol with six rounds of ammunition concealed beneath the rear seats. Additionally, a black bag containing two 20-volt grinding machines, a bolt cutter, and a large screwdriver was found inside the vehicle,” he added.

Van Dyk stated that preliminary investigations at the scene revealed the firearm had been reported stolen from Sinoville SAPS.

All four suspects were arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, ammunition, and housebreaking implements.

He also added that the investigation remains ongoing to determine whether the suspects can be linked to other criminal activities. The recovered firearm will undergo forensic analysis to establish whether it has been used in any previous crimes.

Silverton SAPS Station Commander Colonel Moshata praised the officers for their vigilance and unwavering commitment to safeguarding the community.
