All roads led to the Galeshewe Open Air Arena in Kimberley at the weekend as friends, family, neighbours, and allies of the LGBTIQ+ community gathered in unison to celebrate the inaugural Northern Cape Pride.
Following the theme “Pride With Purpose”, the event celebrated love, diversity, and the inclusion of trans and gender-diverse individuals, marking a significant milestone in the province’s social landscape.
Vibrant celebrations filled the air as participants united in a shared commitment to love, acceptance, and equality. The festivities featured a colourful parade, inspiring speeches, live performances, and a range of community activities aimed at uplifting and empowering attendees.
Tebogo Makwati, a committed member of the Northern Cape Pride, had expressed the event’s significance, stating: “This historic event marks a significant moment for our province, providing a platform for voices that celebrate diversity and promote understanding among all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.”
The Pride festivities kicked off with a week-long series of events designed to engage the community on various issues.
Events ranged from commemorating significant heroes and heroines in the fight for equality to facilitating healing through spiritual connections and hosting community dialogues that underscore the importance of inclusivity.
Among those who marked this momentous occasion was the Forum for the Empowerment of Women (FEW), a national black lesbian feminist non-profit organisation.
Its presence further enhanced the celebratory atmosphere as it extended heartfelt support for individuals and allies contributing to the rich tapestry of diversity.
“As we come together to celebrate our vibrant community during this year’s first Northern Cape Pride festivities, we want to express our heartfelt support for every individual who contributes to the rich tapestry of our diversity.
“At Forum for the Empowerment of Women, we believe in the power of unity and inclusivity, and we are proud to stand alongside you in this celebration of love, acceptance, and equality.
“Pride is not just a moment; it’s political. It’s a reminder of the progress we’ve made and the work that still lies ahead. We recognise the importance of creating safe and welcoming spaces for all, and we are committed to making sure communities have pride.
“As proud supporters of the Northern Cape, we are excited to participate in the meaningful workshops and festivities to amplify our voices and celebrate the incredible contributions of the LGBTIQ+ community. Together, let's continue to advocate for justice, equality, and acceptance for all.”
The DA in the Northern Cape also joined the festivities, highlighting its support for the inaugural event.
