While many will be cruising on the seven seas for the festive season, director at First Loyalty, Samantha Pillay, highlighted people can instead strengthen their relationships instead of exchanging expensive gifts for the holidays.
Pillay cited research by Cornell University that people derive satisfaction from experiential purchases – outings and activities – than materials ones.
The study indicated that experiences strengthen relationships as people create memories that they will cherish for a very long time.
“Similarly, the Journal of Happiness Studies found that family bonding through shared activities increases overall well-being and life satisfaction,” said Pillay.
She suggested five ideas that families can utilise to share intimate moments, without stretching their budget.
1. Dads can create eternal memories with their children by spending quality time on outdoor adventures, such as hiking, fishing, or camping in nature.
“Whatever the activity, it is the perfect setting to create shared stories and memories with your boy(s) that will last a lifetime,” said Pillay.
2. Pillay suggested that families can go retro and enjoy the cinematic experience, as the world has adapted to streaming content.
“There’s something special about the cinema experience that brings everyone together in a way streaming just can’t match.
“The warm, buttery aroma of fresh popcorn wafting through the theatre, the excitement of going out and seeing a film on the big screen – it’s a timeless tradition that bridges generations, from your childhood memories to new ones with your kids,” she said.
3. There is nothing as old as sharing a meal, which can strengthen family bonds.
Pillay said families can wine and dine together at a family-friendly restaurant, where everyone can enjoy their favourite food and have some relaxed conversations. No phones are allowed.
4. Pillay mentioned mothers can enjoy some girl time bonding with their daughters over a spa date.
“Moms and daughters, treat yourselves to some pampering. Whether it’s festive manicures for Christmas, a relaxing foot massage and pedicure after a long day of shopping, or easing year-end stress with a relaxing shoulder massage – these moments of self-care can create the sweetest memories to cherish together,” she said.
5. She encouraged families to spend quality time together by turning their homes into a Christmas wonderland, playing board games, or sharing secret recipes in preparation for the much anticipated Christmas lunch.
“All it takes is being present with the people who matter most. This Christmas, let’s focus on what truly matters, laughter, love, and togetherness,” said Pillay.
