The Government of Tamil Nadu has chosen their third batch of participants to join the "Reaching Your Roots" programme.
The programme is an initiative sponsored by the Commissionerate of Rehabilitation and Welfare of Non-Resident Tamils, Government of Tamil Nadu and its goal is to strengthen the bond between the Tamil Diaspora and their ancestral culture and heritage.
As a part of this programme, every year, young Non Resident Tamils from various countries, are chosen to participate in a 15-day cultural tour of Tamil Nadu.
Ashlin Ellan, a devotee of the Greenwood Park Temple and teacher at Avoca Primary, was chosen for the tour which includes visits to various Tamil archaeological sites, historical monuments, UNESCO world heritage sites and educational institutions.
“I was selected through a nomination and review process based on my active involvement in cultural, social, and community initiatives, as well as my dedication to promoting Tamil heritage and values,” said Ellan.
Ellan serves as Youth Ambassador and PRO of RAGE Community Outreach, Chairman of Green Buddies Environmental Club, and Youth Coordinator of the Hindu Unity Forum of South Africa and Honorary Secretary of the Greenwood Park Shree Ranganathar Temple Society.
These positions reflect his commitment to fostering cultural pride and community engagement.
“The tour takes place across Tamil Nadu, with stops at key cultural and historical sites that highlight the rich Tamil heritage. Specific destinations will include landmarks that embody the history, language, and culture of the Tamil people.
“The aim is to connect Tamil youth in the diaspora with their roots, enabling them to explore Tamil language, culture, and values. It also positions participants as cultural ambassadors who will promote awareness of Tamil heritage globally,” said Ellan.
The tour offers Ellan an opportunity for cultural enrichment, personal growth, and deeper connections with his heritage.
“It will enhance my understanding of Tamil traditions and history, inspiring me to share these experiences with others in my community. I hope to learn about the traditions, values, and resilience of the Tamil people. Understanding the contributions of Tamil culture to the world and the stories of my ancestors will be invaluable,” said Ellan.
He said the tour will deepen his appreciation for his Tamil heritage and equip him to serve as a more effective cultural ambassador.
“It will inspire me to integrate the lessons learned into my community work, fostering greater cultural pride among South African Tamils. I was absolutely thrilled and honoured. The opportunity to represent South Africa and connect with Tamil roots is both humbling and exhilarating,” said Ellan.
The participants will embark on the tour from December 29 to January 12. At the end of the tour, they will become "Cultural ambassadors" and will promote Tamil culture in their respective countries and submit quarterly reports on their activities.
