Rice paper is an underrated ingredient that has far more potential than just wrapping spring rolls. It can be creatively transformed into a variety of dishes, adding a unique texture and flavour.

Rice paper is extremely simple to store. It just needs to be kept away from humidity, preferably in a resealable bag or airtight container, and then put away in a cupboard. It comes in all shapes and sizes, which allows some flexibility for how it can be used in cooking.

When it comes to edible usage, this thin sheet is often used to make a variety of healthy foods. From wrapping fresh vegetables, such as cucumber and carrots, to making spring rolls, to wrapping fish or chicken for steaming; rice paper can also be used to make dumplings, samoosas, and other delicious snacks.

Rice paper can also be used to make wraps for sandwiches and burritos. Finally, rice paper can be used as a wrapper for sushi.

In its original form, it is dry. It needs to be dipped in lukewarm water so it can soften and become flexible, then it can be moulded into the shape you want it to be.

There are so many ways you can experiment with rice papers. Here are four innovative dishes that will elevate your cooking game.

Make rice paper omelette

From savoury scrambles to flavourful frittatas, eggs are one of the most dynamic and nutrient-packed foods around. When it comes to egg-based breakfasts, omelettes arguably reign supreme.

They incorporate elements from scrambles and frittatas, which makes them poultry-provided perfection.

That said, as amazing as traditional omelettes are, your mornings will never be the same after you try rice paper omelettes. You only need eggs, a rice paper wrapper, your choice of protein and other fillings, salt, and cooking oil.

Start by beating the egg yolk in a bowl and preparing your ingredients. Pull out your go-to frying pan, add a bit of oil, and place a sheet of rice paper inside. Next, distribute your diced ingredients on top of the rice paper, followed by your egg yolk.

Once it has a solidified consistency, fold it like a regular omelette and put it on a plate to enjoy.

Fried rice paper

This has become quite popular on TikTok. All you need to do is cut three to four pieces of rice paper into quarters and deep-fry them in hot oil – that’s it.

I have seen videos where a little bit of salt and pepper, or instant ramen seasoning packets are added at the end since the taste of rice paper is quite neutral. Try it plain first. If it is too plain for you, then add seasoning.

Ramen noodles

If you run out of ramen or rice noodles and cannot find them anywhere, you can use rice paper as a replacement and the preparation is easy.

Use the damp kitchen towel to wrap the rice paper for a few seconds just to make it softened enough to roll, but not too wet. Apply a bit of cooking oil on the whole sheet to prevent it from sticking together.

Roll the sheet tightly and use a sharp knife or scissors to slice the wrapper into small strips. Then unroll the rice paper – you can unroll the strips by using a chopstick, and now you will get fine rice noodles ready to use.

Or if you have a pasta machine at home, just slide the wrapper inside. After that just add the noodles into the hot soup and eat.

Pizza rolls

Create a fun and delicious twist on traditional pizza by making rice paper pizza rolls. Start by soaking the rice paper in warm water until it is flexible, then spread a thin layer of tomato sauce over it.

Add your favourite pizza toppings, such as cheese, pepperoni, and bell peppers, and roll them up tightly. Place the rolls on a baking sheet, brush them with olive oil, and bake until they are golden brown.

Serve them with a marinara sauce for dipping, and enjoy a bite-sized burst of flavour.
