Known as one of the best-dressed male celebrities in Mzansi, Oscar Mbo has recently partnered with international fashion brand Steve Madden.
The talented musician, whose real name is Oscar Mbongeni Ndlovu, launched his collection with the brand at an intimate event in Sandton, where he also celebrated his birthday.
While everyone was dressed in black and white as per the theme, the music genius arrived in style in nude pants, a matching shirt that had colourful paintings, brown shoes and black sunglasses.
After the formalities, I managed to steal Ndlovu away for a quick chat. We headed upstairs in the luxurious mansion while the guests enjoyed a sunny day in the lush garden.
As the first man to partner with Steve Madden, the renowned DJ said it was a big deal for his brand.
“It is so huge and very historic. I am honoured to be the one chosen to do this. Given that the brand has been mainly focusing on women, I am looking forward to being able to help them expand into the male department,” he said.
Ndlovu, who graces the cover of GQ South Africa’s August edition, said that although he enjoyed styling himself, he had never anticipated designing.
“I didn’t get to fashion directly. I’ve always loved fashion for myself. Collection clothes, creating a style for myself to wear when I go out and presenting myself at gigs and shows," he said.
“Being able to do fashion stuff at this level where designing or collaborating with brands is a huge step that I can touch and expand what I can do and how far I can go. I am very grateful to start like this.
“I have my brand and my merchandise line but now touching on an international brand like Steve Madden is very inciting.”
Besides partnering with other brands, Ndlovu has his merchandise (sweaters and T-shirts) to promote his latest EP “Have A Groovy Day”.
In this soulful deep house project, he worked with several musicians, including his close friend Kabza De Small, Sbani The Vocalist, Zee Nxumalo, LebtoniQ, Brandon Dhludhlu, Smartblack Mampondo, Still Nitro, Darqnessreign and Teer.
His family fuelled his love for music. He grew up in a house where music was at the forefront. DJing and producing music came naturally to him.
Fusing music with fashion, Ndlovu has created a name for himself in the industry. One of his style basics is carrying a bag because he can safely tuck away his belongings, including headphones, without compromising his style.
If anything, the bag always adds more flair to his dapper looks.
He said every man must have certain items in their wardrobe: “White shirt, black jeans, white sneakers, leather and denim jackets, caps and male bags. Match all those items and you are going to look top-notch.”
