Thandiswa Mazwai is returning to the Artscape Theatre to perform music from her latest album, "Sankofa".
This follows her sold-out show at the venue in 2023 and fans are eagerly anticipating her performance this weekend.
In May, the renowned local musician released her fourth album, at Carnival City in Johannesburg. The word "Sankofa" is from Ghana's Twi language, meaning "go back and fetch what has been left behind." It’s about reclaiming lost parts of our history and identity.
It was recorded in Johannesburg, Dakar and New York, blending Xhosa music, jazz and West African sounds. Mazwai worked with Tendai Shoko on the songs while producers Meshell Ndegeocello and Nduduzo Makhatini also added their unique touches.
The “Sankofa” Live show will feature new songs and Mazwai’s classic hits, including tracks from her first solo album, "Zabalaza," which turns 20 in 2024.
In a recent interview with “Glamour”, she shared how recording in different cities made the album special.
“All my work is different. I like experimenting with new things and love the idea of inserting my voice into new worlds.
“’Sankofa’ was recorded in Johannesburg, Dakar, and New York and the musicians in these cities brought their own sonic point of view to the theme,” she said.
Mazwai is renowned for her bold approach to music, living proudly as a black, African woman and a queer person.
She also expressed her excitement about the upcoming shows in statement: “I am so excited to share this new music with my fans. It is such a privilege to still be able to do what I love after 30 years in this industry.”
“Thank you for all the love and support. (The shows) will be a celebration and a meditation on who we are, who we have been and who we hope to become.“
Mazwai’s return to the stage promises to be a powerful celebration of music, culture and identity.

Driemanskap live
Driemanskap, a trio formed in 2001, has become a driving force in South African hip hop.
Made up of Ma-B, Redondo and Dla, the group are known for their high-energy performances that leave audiences in awe.
Pioneers of the Spaza movement, which is characterised by socially conscious Xhosa raps, boom-bap beats and a reverence for hip hop as an artform and culture, they incorporate isiXhosa, English, and Cape Flats slang into their rhymes as they proudly represent the Mother City.
Their journey to prominence began with a stand-out performance at the 2005 “Baobab Festival”, where they opened for the legendary New York hip hop crew, Dead Prez. The group made a lasting impression, stealing the show with their dynamic stage presence.
In 2006, they created the soundtrack for SABC 2's "Keeping it Real" show, and by 2012, they featured in a global TV campaign for Reebok. They are also proud brand ambassadors for the South African streetwear company, Butan Wear.
Known for their relentless work ethic, Driemanskap has performed across South Africa at park jams, community events, major corporate functions and festivals.
Their dedication has seen them share the stage with renowned artists like Simphiwe Dana, Kendrick Lamar, iFani, Khuli Chana, Cassper Nyovest, Femi Kuti, Alicia Keys, Dead Prez and the Wu-Tang Clan.
They have also collaborated with South African music legend, Ringo Madlingozi.
