Hollywood A-listers Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are set to reprise their roles in the “Practical Magic” sequel, almost three decades after the first movie was released.
With the release date for “Practical Magic 2” rumoured to be in 2025, Warner Bros Pictures recently took to social media to announce that the witchy sequel was in the works.
“It’s official! Practical Magic 2 is in development and coming soon. 🌟🧙♀️,” the film production and distribution company recently posted on Instagram.
The first movie, released in 1998, was based on Alice Hoffman’s 1995 novel of the same name and was a pop culture phenomenon.
The fantasy comedy centred on Sally (Bullock) and Gillian (Kidman) Owens who, after the death of their parents, move in with their relatives.
The witches use the gift of practical magic, which they inherited from their parents, to overcome obstacles in life.
This includes saving themselves from the evil spirit of Gillian’s abusive boyfriend, who was murdered by Sally. There’s also a generational curse that causes the death of any of the family members male love interests, which they appear to break with the power of sisterhood.
The Oscar-winning actresses are set to produce “Practical Magic 2” alongside Denise di Novi.
Kidman confirmed to “People” that she and Bullock were set to return for the sequel and portray their original characters.
“Yes, I will be in it. And Sandy will be in it. And that’s that,” she said.
“There's a lot more to tell which is why we go: ‘Okay, this is kind of interesting now to be able to do this.’ (We) found a way in.”
Its unclear if any other original cast members like Aidan Quinn, Dianne Wiest or Stockard Channing, will be returning.
Di Novi said the sequel’s storyline would draw heavily from Hoffman's 2021 novel, “The Book of Magic”.
She recently told “Entertainment Weekly”: “I think (fans are) going to be very pleased. We're going to be very faithful. We’re cognisant to how important those characters and that movie are to so many people. We’re not going to reinvent the wheel.
“We’re going to draw from Alice Hoffman’s books, as the first movie did, and we’re going to be true to the chronology of how many years later it is.”
She added that they would respect the characters, story and locations from the original picture and confirmed that the sequel would be released at some point next year.
“It’s going to be in 2025 but I’m not exactly sure when. We’re just beginning the script, and Akiva Goldsman, who worked on the original and 10 million other things since then, is writing the script.”
