South African father-and-son duo Cantrel have released their new two-track EP, “Something in the Orange”. Composed of Neil and Jesse Breytenbach, they hope their music serves as a source of inspiration.
They are ready to make their mark on the music scene with their father-son bond.
The EP includes a radio edit and an acoustic version of the track, originally written and performed by American country artist Zach Bryan. It was reimagined by Cantrel into a compelling adult contemporary ballad that highlights Jesse's rock voice.
“Country music has a rich tradition of storytelling, often painting vivid pictures with words,” Neil said.
“With our rendition of 'Something in the Orange', we hope to really draw listeners into the song, making them feel like they are part of the story.”
Neil is a keyboardist for local band Prime Circle. He is also a prolific songwriter with a treasure trove of unreleased music and serves as an ambassador for Princess Charlene of Monaco.
Jesse, 21, started making music with his father during the Covid-19 lockdown when they found themselves with more time on their hands.
During online schooling breaks, Jesse joined Neil for jam sessions – a first for the pair – and Cantrel was born.
The duo are now touring together, having recently returned from Austria, where they performed in Salzburg and Vienna.
Their close-knit relationship makes them a rarity in the music world. They also share a passion for grunge music and a love for 1990s bands such as Nirvana, Linkin Park, Seether and Limp Bizkit.
Both Jesse, who started playing guitar at the age of 8, and Neil, who began playing the keyboard at the same age, developed their musical talents early on.
In Cantrel, Jesse takes on vocals and guitar, with Neil on bass, keys and backing vocals.
Looking back at the songs they've created in their short time together, Neil says he loves performing the rock track “Jump”.
“Final Hour”, which he wrote for his mother in just 20 minutes during her final hours battling cancer, holds a special place in their hearts.
“Chains” and “Runaway” are dedicated to anyone facing abusive relationships.
