As Women’s Month draws to a close, there is still some time to commemorate the occasion.
If you are a music lover, here are some songs released by women artists this month, to add to your playlist.
Elaine - “Waiting on You”
Renowned R&B songstress, Elaine (full name Elaine Moyo), returned to the music scene recently following a brief hiatus.
On August 2, she released her first single of the year, “Waiting on You”, which is part of her upcoming debut album.
The sultry and soulful single has already been making waves as fans look forward to even more musical offerings from the singer.
Elaine made her career breakthrough in 2019 with her debut EP, “Elements”.
It earned her widespread acclaim as “When I’m in Love” and “Wrong” earned her legions of fans.
Charli XCX featuring Billie Eilish - “Guess”
These internationally-renowned female artists have combined their talents for the very first time with the powerful new hit, “Guess”.
Released earlier this month, the upbeat dance hit is heating up the party scene, particularly as the US, Europe and other northern hemisphere regions are currently enjoying summer.
In addition, all the underwear used in the music video have been donated to I Support The Girls foundation.
The organisation distributes essential items, including bras, underwear and menstrual hygiene products to women in need, allowing those who are homelessness, impoverished or in distress to live with dignity.
Nanteg - “Imake”
Rising recording artist Nanteg is making waves with her latest single, “Imake”.
Released on August 2, the stirring anthem celebrates African uniqueness and its capacity for internal economic growth. Through the song, the singer conveys a message of empowerment and self-assurance.
She said the inspiration came from a personal event and her rural Zimbabwean heritage.
“At its core, ‘Imake’ is a song about one's ability to make money and the confidence to do so,” she said in a statement.
“I wrote the song after an argument with my sister about who is in the diaspora. She believed that moving abroad meant making more money, but I strongly felt that as Africans, we have the resources and resilience to thrive wherever we are.”
Kesha - “Joyride”
American singer-songwriter Kesha dropped her new single “Joyride”, marking her first release as an indie artist since parting ways with Dr Luke’s Kemosabe Records and RCA.
The single was perfectly timed to be released during the northern hemisphere’s summer.
Music critics have noted that the song is something of a departure from the more experimental nature of her fifth studio album, “Gag Order”, which was released in May last year.
“Joyride” is an electro-banger which aligns with her previous hits such as “Tik Tok” and “We R Who We R”.
Dennis Ferrer featuring DBN Gogo, Effected, Triple X Da Ghost and Mia Tuttavilla - “Touched the Sky”
While male artists feature on this classic deep house track which has been given an amapiano spin, DBN Gogo (real name Mandisa Radebe) and Mia Tuttavilla are two female powerhouses who add their flair to the single.
The remixed version of “Touched the Sky”, which was released on August 8, seeks to give the song a modern twist and introduce it to a new generation of music lovers.
The original version of the single exemplified the deep house genre’s soulful qualities. It quickly became an Ibiza favourite, reaching the number one spot on the Beatport charts as it solidified its status as a club anthem and a staple in DJ sets across the globe.
