Rapper Mandoza, born Mduduzi Tshabalala, left an indelible mark on South African music before his death in 2016. Known for his iconic tracks like "Nkalakatha," "Tornado," and "Sgelekeqe", Mandoza's influence continues.
Keeping his memory alive has become a significant effort, reflecting his lasting impact on the music scene.
In August 2023, a compelling six-part biopic called “Nkalakatha: the Life of Mandoza” brought Mandoza’s story to life, shedding light on both his triumphs and personal struggles.
This series offered viewers a glimpse into the heart of the man behind the music, portraying his rise from Soweto and his rise to fame.
The role of Mandoza was brought to life by Wiseman Mncube, who shared his experience with IOL: "The weight of portraying an icon was heavy on my shoulders. I felt a deep responsibility to honour his memory and pay homage to his legacy. I am honoured to have been chosen for the role."
But Mandoza's story is far from over.
Speaking to “Times Live”, Busi Kunene, who spoke on behalf of Mandoza's wife, Mpho Tshabalala, is working on a new project called "The Road to Nkalakatha."
This musical will bring Mandoza's journey to the stage, featuring a narrator and live performances of his popular songs.
Kunene explained: “The musical will tell Mandoza's story and journey through theatre, with a narrator and playing out scenes from his life on stage. It will pay homage to his most popular songs.”
The goal is to inspire people to visit theatres and experience live performances.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of "Nkalakatha", a special tribute concert is planned for September 18 at the Soweto Theatre.
Following this, the musical will tour other provinces, building up to a grand 25-year celebration in 2025.
Kunene added: “We are planning to have a 25 Years of Nkalakatha Tribute Concert at Orlando Stadium, which is where Mandoza had his last performance just seven days before he passed.”
