Two well-known Mzansi musicians have teamed up on a new single, “Never Forget”, which will feature prominently in the upcoming documentary, “A Cape Town Song: The Story of The Luxurama”.
For the first time, Jimmy Nevis and Craig Lucas have worked together to make a memorable soundtrack for the soon-to-be- released doccie.
The song encourages people never to forget the artists who came through the Luxurama Theatre.
Produced by Nicki and Liesel Priem of Little Mad Badger, along with Nevis as co-producer and music director, this doccie shares the forgotten tales of the popular Luxurama Theatre in Wynberg.
The Luxurama has been a staple of the community since it was built in 1963 and it has launched the music and acting careers of many local artists as well as housed international acts such as Percy Sledge (who was granted honorary white citizenship), Engelbert Humperdinck and Peaches & Herb.
Over the last six years, over 30 people closely connected to the Luxurama were filmed. Sadly, some have since passed on.
About being involved in the project, Nevis said: “Creating music for this documentary has been a deeply meaningful experience. ‘Never Forget’ is a tribute to the artists and musicians who have shaped the legacy of the Luxurama Theatre, honouring their impact on our community.”
He added that it is important the story of the Luxurama is not “lost to history”.
“This was a place that, through music, brought all kinds of South Africans together despite a regime that sort to tear us apart.
“It was a place where glamour courted controversy, where international acts dazzled audiences, where local legends launched their careers and inspired the next generation of Cape Town’s entertainers.
“The Lux played a huge in the South African music industry, and also taught me so much about my own heritage. This is why I joined the project as a producer and music director.”
He said: “I think the song is a friendly reminder that we need to continue to carry that baton in the relay of music.”
The team started the doccie six years ago but the Covid-19 pandemic caused delays. Now it is now moving forward with newfound vigour.
To help with the documentary's completion, the filmmakers have started a crowdfunding effort in tandem with the release of “Never Forget”.
