Former Kaizer Chiefs head coach Molefi Ntseki has opened up about his unsuccessful stint at the “Phefeni Glamour Boys”, saying that supporters of the club were against his appointment.
Following his sacking from his job as Bafana Bafana coach after failing to qualify the national team for the Africa Cup of Nations, back in 2021, Ntseki was roped in by the Soweto giants as Head of the Technical and Youth Development Academy. He was then promoted to the position of head coach after Arthur Zwane was given the boot.
With the club struggling, the move to trust Ntseki with head coaching duties at Chiefs was met with a great deal of scepticism from the club’s loyal fan base.
Under his leadership, Chiefs never really got going. And as results went against him, the club’s supporters turned against him. After one match, police had to intervene after objects were hurled at him as he attempted to leave the field.
Ntseki would later get fired from his position as head coach.
Almost a year after his sacking, the tactician sat down with Andile Ncube on Metro FM this week and revealed that the club’s supporters were not happy with his appointment.
“When you look at my appointment, from the word go, the supporters were not happy. We wanted this coach — Nasreddine Nabi — and the coach could not get appointed.“ Ntseki said.
“So already there was a bit of frustration, and the supporters, because of what they had experienced over years, wanted somebody they believed will bring them success.”
After his departure, the club re-appointed former coach Arthur Zwane to lead them in an effort to turn things around. However, after a series of poor results, he was again fired from his position.
Former Al Ahly assistant coach Cavin Johnson, who just like Ntseki had been brought into the club as Head of the Technical and Youth Development Academy, was handed the reigns as caretaker coach.
However, after only managing to lead the side to a disastrous 10th place finish in the league table last season, he was also shown the door by the club.
Since then Amakhosi have gone on to appoint experienced Tunisian coach Nasreddine Nabi with the hopes that he can bring back the glory days at Naturena.
The club is currently in a pre-season camp in Turkey and will be hoping for an improved showing in the upcoming season.
