In recent years, pundits, fans and coaches have voiced concerns about the lack of prolific strikers in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) capable of consistently finding the back of the net.
Last season, the highest goal scorer in the PSL was Tshegofatso Mabasa, who scored only 16 goals. In contrast, strikers in top leagues around the world consistently score 20 or more goals in a single season.
However, before South African football struggled to produce quality strikers capable of consistently finding the back of the net. The PSL was home to some of the most dangerous strikers.
As the debate rages on about the lack of lethal strikers in the PSL, IOL Sport takes a look at the top five PSL all-time leading goal scorers.
Siyabonga Nomvethe (123 goals)
Nomvethe had a long and illustrious career having played for top teams such as Orlando Pirates Kaizer Chiefs, Moroka Swallows, and AmaZulu FC.
His impressive performances and goal-scoring ability allowed him to represent Bafana Bafana a total of 81 times, during which he scored 16 goals. "Bhele" as he was affectionately known in South African football also plied his trade abroad in Italy for teams such as Udinese and Empoli Football Club.
The now 47-year-old has since retired from the beautiful game and has ventured to acting making cameos on popular shows such as Uzalo on the SABC.
Peter Shalulile (117)

The 30-year-old Shalulile has been one of the most consistent performers in the PSL in recent years. He currently has a total of 117 goals and is just six goals away from surpassing Nomvethe's record.
Currently, Shalulile plays for Mamelodi Sundowns and has been instrumental in their league dominance in recent years. He has also won the prestigious PSL Golden Boot award twice.
Bradley Grobler (112 goals)
The long-time-serving SuperSport United striker has a total of 113 goals and is without a doubt one of the greatest finishers in the history of the PSL.
Now 36 years old, he has also represented Bafana Bafana 12 times. He previously expressed his desire to become the PSL's highest goal scorer; however, his advancing age and recurring injuries have made this goal a challenging one to achieve.
Daniel Mudau (110 goals)
The Mamelodi-born Mudau scored 110 goals during his playing days in the PSL. He is widely regarded as one of Mamelodi Sundown's greatest players.
He represented the national team 16 times.
Mabhuti Khenyeza (110 goals)
Khenyeza was a household name in South African football during playing days knows for his pace, skill and ability to score in tight spaces.
He played for teams such as Golden Arrows, Kaizer Chiefs, AmaZulu, and the now-defunct Ajax Cape Town. Currently , Khenyeza is the assistant coach at Eastern Cape based outfit Chippa United.
