Kaizer Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jnr went to great lengths to explain the club’s January transfer strategy, without actually explaining anything at all.
In a 350-word statement on the matter published by iDiski Times, Motaung danced around the issue like a shrewd publications relations specialist.
The fact remains though, Chiefs are still not title contenders at 12 points behind table-topping Mamelodi Sundowns after 13 games. The Brazilians also have two games in hand over Chiefs just for good measure.
After finishing 10th in the league last season, Chiefs appointed Nasreddine Nabi as coach for the new season.
While Nabi got off to the perfect start by winning his first two league encounters to begin his tenure at Chiefs, it’s been tough going since as they hold sixth spot on the log.
In an apparent attempt to address the issue of bringing new talent to the Soweto Giants, Motaung Jnr said: “I think it’s always a sensitive topic, because we would love as a team to be able to be transparent and speak to the people,”.
“I mean, our people and fans are the most important people and stakeholders, and we respect them tremendously highly.
“And I really want to just take away this connotation that ‘the club is not doing anything. The club does not respect the supporters’. They are everything to us! We do everything for them, and it would be foolish for us not to be doing anything in this window.”
With their 16 goals from 13 games, Chiefs have scored the second most in the league this season. Orlando Pirates and Sundowns have both scored 22.
However, it’s the leaky defence of Chiefs that is the biggest concern. The AmaKhosi have conceded 16 goals, meaning they have the second worst defence in the league.
Still, Motaung Jnr continued to heap the praise on his players.
“We’ve got to respect the players that we do have, given the confidence for them to be able to do the job in the field, but we are very much aware of the areas that we need to strengthen.
“We’ve been working tirelessly every day with the technical staff, with the management, with the committee, to make sure that we make the right decisions. And we obviously have been engaged with many clubs, with many players, but it’s very disrespectful to come out and speak about other clubs players.”
