Malabo, Equatorial Guinea – Striker Islam Slimani will miss Algeria’s decisive final group game against Senegal at the African Cup of Nations.
The Algeria Football Federation says Slimani was injured in the 1-0 loss to Ghana, missed training on Saturday and will be sidelined against Senegal after medical tests. The federation did not specify what the injury was.
Slimani is one of the team’s most important attacking players and scored in a 3-1 win over South Africa at the start of the group stage.
Algeria came to the African Cup as one of the tournament favorites but is not yet certain of a place in the quarter-finals following its stoppage-time loss to Ghana on Friday. Algeria is third in Group C and needs to beat Senegal on Tuesday to be certain of progressing. – Sapa-AP
