Margaret Gardiner, the first South African to win the Miss Universe title, is set to return home for the Miss South Africa 2024 coronation ceremony at SunBet Arena in Pretoria during the week of August 8–10.

Gardiner, who is based in Los Angeles, celebrated a historic success when she won the coveted title in Mexico 46 years ago, on July 24, 1978.

Her visit also falls in line with her plans to publish her fictional book, “Damaged Beauty: Joey Superstar”, which will first be published in South Africa in March next year, and then in the United States and the United Kingdom.

In a recent Instagram post, she shared a photo of her strutting the stage showcasing a national costume that represented the indigenous ostrich and South Africa’s national flower, the protea.

Taking a trip down memory lane about the momentous day she said: “This July, I celebrate the huge honour of representing my country in Mexico 46 years ago and becoming the first Miss Universe from South Africa. An honour that stood for almost 40 years before I was joined by two incredible women, Demi-Leigh Tebow in 2017 and Zozibini Tunzi in 2019.”

Margaret’s journey, from winning the Miss Universe crown to becoming an esteemed journalist and author, is a testament to her enduring grace and talent. Her contributions to the fields of journalism and literature continue to inspire many, both in South Africa and around the world.

Her victory was a historic turning point for the country. Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, in 2017, and Zozibini Tunzi, in 2019, were the next South African beauty queens to follow in her footsteps.

Gardiner, a renowned writer, celebrity, and journalist, frequently interviews A-list Hollywood stars at prestigious events like the Golden Globes and Oscars.
