Alfred Challis, CEO of MANZI Water, shares his journey from humble beginnings to super-heading a rapidly expanding prepared water business with over 100 outlets nationwide.
In the small-town community of Montagu, nestled in the scenic Western Cape, Challis began a journey that would not only transform his life but also pave the way for innovation in South Africa's water retail industry.
He reveals that his early years were marked by separation and relocation, a pivotal move to Mossel Bay after his parents parted ways.
Rather than succumbing to the challenges that life presented, he sought solace in skateboarding, using the extreme sport as an outlet to express his resilience.
His dedication was evident as he participated in various contests, showcasing not only talent but an unwavering commitment to success.
“Every job I held has been a steppingstone. I learned from each experience, which fuelled my drive to make a difference in the industry. Becoming the CEO of MANZI Water is not just a personal achievement; it’s a testament to what hard work can accomplish,” he shared.
He shares that his career journey took him from delivering pizzas to working in a retail outlet selling purified water, where he quickly caught the attention of his superiors with his relentless work ethic.
Over the course of 15 years, his career trajectory ascended, taking him to various cities including eMalahleni and Tshwane, where he often moved with little more than a couch and a bed crammed into his Ford Bantam bakkie.
He also reveals that the frequent relocations undoubtedly strained his personal relationships, yet also served to fortify his resolve.
Through sheer grit and determination, Challis ultimately became the driving force behind the company, leading it through its nascent stages and establishing it as a formidable player in the retail landscape of South Africa.
Through his guidance has experienced remarkable growth in recent years, notably celebrating the opening of its 105th outlet. This milestone reflects not only the company's burgeoning success but also its commitment to providing accessible, high-quality water solutions to communities across the nation.
He also embraces a leadership style that focuses on inclusivity, empowerment, and fostering a culture built on collaboration and innovation.
“MANZI Water is not just a business; it’s a family born out of a shared vision and purpose.”
“We are committed to making a meaningful difference in the lives of our customers, employees, and the communities we serve. Together, we are shaping a sustainable future for everyone,” Challis asserts.
