Youth Day: Teach pupils about June 16 relevance – ECD teacher on trip to Hector Pieterson Memorial
A teacher from an early childhood development centre believes children need to know about June 16, and how it changed the political landscape in South Africa.
This was after teachers from ECDs brought children to the Hector Pieterson memorial in Soweto on Thursday to mark June 16.
Early childhood development centre principal Nomsa Mthethwa, from Emseni Day Care Centre in Roodepoort, told IOL at the Hector Pieterson Memorial where they were gathered to celebrate Youth Day that it was important for them to teach children about June 16.
Minister of Police Bheki Cele was hosted by the Khayelitsha Development Forum on Youth Day where he handed over police vans to the SAPS in response to the high crime level in the township.
Over the past few weeks, there has been an increase in shootings during the day. In one incident, four people were killed in Site B when gunmen entered a local supermarket.
Cele said the area was notorious for mass killings and invited everyone in the community to play a role in combating crime.

As this year’s Youth Day is commemorated under a cloud of record unemployment levels among the country’s young, some youths are demonstrating the significance of self-sustainability to create better lives for themselves.
About 9 to 10 million young people of working age are currently unemployed, with youth unemployment described as another pandemic at a staggering 66.5%.

Youth Day: 5 places to visit to commemorate June 16
South Africa has a painful history of segregation and apartheid. Unfortunately, some would rather we forget the past – but we can’t.
Youth Day is a commemoration of the Soweto Uprising, on June 16, 1976. On this day, more than 20 000 youth from Soweto took to the streets in protest against a directive, from the then Bantu Education Department, that Afrikaans had to be used as a medium of instruction in secondary schools.

Ahmed Kathrada Foundation Youth Day march to affect routes in Pretoria
The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation will be taking to the streets on Youth Day, in a march to submit a memorandum to the office of the Presidency, regarding the circumstances which the current generation of youth are living under.
The march will also be in commemoration of the class of 1976.
The memorandum that will be submitted will address issues of unemployment in the country, specifically among the youth – this is among many other challenges mentioned.
Several Youth Day events are expected to bring to the fore the spirited activism and solidarity that marked June 16, 1976.
Fight Inequality Alliance SA national co-ordinator Wafaa Abdurahman said a number of activist groups are involved in the event – to highlight the struggle against apartheid and its unjust laws – at Livingstone High School in Claremont.
