Police have launched a manhunt for a prisoner who escaped from Pollsmoor Prison in the Western Cape.
The Department of Correctional Services confirmed that Yanga Wayithi, 35, who is serving a six-month sentence for theft and trespassing escaped from Pollsmoor Correctional Centre
DCS spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said Wayithi was assigned to a work team responsible for maintaining the facility’s grounds.
He said an internal investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances of the escape.
"The South African Police Service (SAPS) has been notified, and a case of escape from lawful custody has been opened."
Nxumalo said in addition The Department of Correctional Services' tracing team is actively working to ensure a swift re-arrest.
"As the manhunt continues, the public is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities."
DCS said more information would be made available at a later stage.
In another incident, Martin Jackson was re-arrested after he escaped from Boksburg Correctional Centre in November last year.
Jackson was admitted to the facility on April 10, 2015, and was serving a 20-year sentence for robbery, theft and possession of a firearm with ammunition.
