A KwaZulu-Natal man who murdered his grandmother has been sentenced in the Greytown Regional Court. 

Ayanda Fulela, 29, was found guilty of murdering his 72-year-old grandmother and violating her corpse in Nseleni.

The provincial police spokesperson, Constable Siyabonga Nkwanyana said the incident took place in December 2024.

According to police, on January 2, 2025, a missing person’s case was reported after an elderly woman had been missing for two days.

“Acting swiftly, Kranskop detectives, led by Detective Sergeant Thobelani Khoza, launched an investigation. Their inquiries led them to the home of the complainant, where evidence pointed to the deceased’s grandson, Ayanda Fulela, as a suspect,” Nkwanyana said.

Police questioned Fulela. He ultimately confessed to having stabbed his grandmother after a heated argument.

He further told police in an attempt to conceal the crime, he then set her body on fire elsewhere. 

On March 4, 2025, Fulela was convicted of the charges.

“The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Kranskop has secured a significant conviction following the meticulous investigative efforts of Kranskop detectives. Their diligent work ensured that all necessary evidence was effectively presented before the judiciary, leading to the successful prosecution of Fulela,” Nkwanyana said.

Fulela has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his grandmother. The court further sentenced him to an additional 10 years direct imprisonment for violating a corpse. The court also further declared him unfit to possess a firearm.
