The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) has terminated the employment of its Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), Zolani Matthews, with immediate effect.
This decision, announced on Thursday, comes shortly after Matthews was reinstated by the Labour Court following his previous dismissal in 2021.
PRASA Board Chairperson, Nosizwe Nokwe-Macamo, explained that the termination was necessary to maintain the agency’s focus on its core objectives.
"PRASA has made significant progress in getting South Africa’s passenger rail service back on track, with 31 of the 40 rail corridors opened and functioning at limited capacity.
“The Board cannot afford to be distracted from delivering on PRASA’s core mandate of transporting commuters safely and cost-effectively," she stated.
The termination follows an extended legal battle stemming from Matthews’ initial dismissal, which was due to his failure to disclose dual citizenship a key issue affecting his security clearance.
Despite the Labour Court's ruling to reinstate Matthews, Nokwe-Macamo emphasized that the board had no choice but to terminate his contract after failing to settle.
"In compliance with the Labour Court judgment of July 1, PRASA reinstated Matthews and paid to him the backdated remuneration, as contemplated in the ruling. However, given that the attempts to reach an agreement have failed, a settlement is no longer an option," Nokwe-Macamo elaborated.
As Prasa moves forward, the board remains committed to enhancing rail services across South Africa, ensuring safety, and implementing modernization projects.
Hishaam Emeran has been appointed as PRASA's new GCEO. Nokwe-Macamo stated, “We have a strong management team led by Hishaam Emeran, and we’re confident in their ability to meet PRASA’s objectives and handle current challenges.
“Prasa is in good hands as we invest in future projects, new lines, and new trains.”
