The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has recorded over 229,000 online admission applications for the 2025 academic year after opening on Thursday.
Within the first hour of opening, around 79,000 applications were registered in the system.
The department said it successfully processed over 100,000 Grade1 applications and more than 129,000 Grade 8 applications.
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane visited Diepsloot Youth Centre, in Johannesburg to assist parents and guardians applying for their children for next year.
“We are proud of this monumental achievement, processing such a high number of applications on the first day,” he said.
Chiloane said the high number of application reflects the improvements made to the system, which operated smoothly, and the demand for the quality education provided at Gauteng public schools.
“We are delighted by the positive feedback from parents who completed their applications without issues and reassure others not to panic as the system will be open until 12 August,” he added.
The admission application period will remain open until August 12, 2024.
“Parents and guardians are encouraged to either upload certified copies of the required documents onto the system or submit them at the schools they applied to within seven school days,” said Chiloane.
Additionally, Chiloane said parents are urged to visit district offices or one of the 80 decentralised walk-in centres for assistance with their applications.
For further help, applicants can contact the GDE’s Call Centre at 0800 000 789 or send a message via WhatsApp to 060 891 036.
For the 2024 academic year, over 160,000 applications were recorded.
