Mpumalanga police arrested two men who allegedly kidnapped and robbed a German tourist in Graskop on Monday.

Provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli, said the suspects allegedly attacked the German tourist shortly after he withdrew money from an ATM at a local petrol station.

“A concerned member of the public promptly alerted the police about the incident which led to a swift response by the dedicated law enforcement officers,” said Mdhluli.

Mdhluli said police received information indicating that the suspects were travelling in a Hyundai SUV and members who were on the streets busy with Festive Season Operations, acted on the intelligence and managed to locate the vehicle.

“The suspects were cornered and apprehended by the astute members in the nearby bushes. Fortunately, the male victim was rescued alive, though with injuries sustained during the ordeal,” explained Mdhluli.

Mdhluli said police seized the vehicle believed to have been used in the commission of the crime and it will form part of the ongoing investigation.

“Police are exploring the possibility of additional charges against the suspects, including potential links to other criminal activities involving the same vehicle.”

He added that preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle was rented.

Meanwhile the provincial acting police commissioner, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the swift and effective actions of the Police officers involved in apprehending the suspects.

"The success of the 2024/2025 Safer Festive Season Operation is evident in this operation. We are pleased with the outcome, especially considering a previous tragic incident involving a German tourist that was unfortunately murdered on October 4, 2022.

“We urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities. The collaboration between the Police and the community is vital in combating crime, as demonstrated in this case," added Mkhwanazi.
