Competing in the 2025 Toyota Fortuner Challenge in the Western Cape’s Overberg Region was an experience unlike anything I've ever had before.

I’ve taken part in many events, but the stakes had never been this high — winning a R1-million Toyota Fortuner GR-Sport adds a whole new level of pressure. My daily CrossFit, running and biking prepared me physically, while my engineering background helped with technical tasks such as solving puzzles and using our Garmin watches for navigation.

Sprinting along the beach against Victor Sekekete and Willard Katsande and diving into the ocean to rescue a drowning person was one of the highlights.

Composure

But maintaining composure with such a life-changing prize on the line was the real challenge.

I’m incredibly grateful to have been paired with Toyota Gazoo Racing driver Saood Variawa, whose physical and mental toughness, along with his ability to stay calm under pressure, made all the difference.

The challenge was well-organised, with exciting and demanding events that pushed us to our limits. Being surrounded by such an amazing group - fellow challengers, sporting heroes, and organisers - made the experience even more special.

Solving a complex puzzle while fatigued was a tough challenge.

Highlights

Here are some highlights from the competition:

Lifeguard challenge: Sprinting along the beach against Victor Sekekete (Toyota Cheetahs rugby team captain) and Willard Katsande (former professional footballer and Kaizer Chiefs legend) and diving into the ocean to rescue a drowning person was intense and exhilarating.

Golf course escape: Navigating the golf course at night was both physically and mentally demanding. With Saood’s expert guidance, we used Morse code to find our final coordinate and secured the win.

4x4 challenge: This was the event I was most nervous about, as precise execution was crucial. Thankfully, Saood’s expertise took the pressure off, especially during potential tie-breakers. Driving the Fortuner through the sand at high speed was an unforgettable thrill.

Specialised MTB challenge: A fast-paced bike sprint through rugged terrain tested our endurance and navigation skills, and we delivered under pressure.

Arena obstacle course: Our teamwork shone here — my speed on the obstacles paired with Saood’s precision in solving the ball-shoot puzzle made us a formidable duo.

Grand finale: From building a raft to solving a complex puzzle under fatigue, the final challenge was a true test of resilience. By the end, we felt confident we had done enough to claim victory.

Raft building had competitors out of their comfort zone.

And the winner is…

The anticipation at the prize-giving was intense.

Although we felt confident, doubts lingered until I saw my name on the car.

That moment was life-changing. Sharing the celebration with my wife, family, close friends, and new friends made during the challenge was the perfect ending to an unforgettable journey.
