Volvo has detailed the second of its three concept cars, the Concept XC Coupé, which it describes as “a sophisticated and capable car for people with an active lifestyle”, ahead of its world premier at the Detroit motor show on 13 January.
Although it's been built to demonstrate the safety capabilities of the Volvo's new Scalable Product Architecture, its styling has also been influenced by the design of modern sports equipment.
The protective principles of the new, modular platform are based on extensive use of high-strength boron steel and structures with innovative decoupling to channel crash forces away from the occupants, making it possible to build more compact, lighter cars without compromising safety, as always the cornerstone of Volvo's design philosophy.
TOUGHER, MORE CAPABLE PERSONA
The two-door, four-seater Concept XC Coupé has a strong connection with its sibling, the Concept Coupé - but its 21” rims, bolder wheel-arches and taller roofline give it a tougher, more capable persona.
The connection with modern, high-tech sports gear has been emphasised by details such matte rubber mouldings covering the rear end of the car, graphics and orange trim elements. Traditional SUV elements, such as side mouldings and skid plates, are designed into the outer panels, flush with the surrounding body areas, rather than added on.
As in the earlier concept, dual crease-lines on the bonnet underline its width and the 'floating' grille below it, while providing placement for two distinctive 'snorts' below the windshield baseline.
The Concept XC Coupe's headlights, however, have unique T-shaped daytime running lights.
