With 143kW and 400Nm on command, the new Opel Astra 2.0 BiTurbo CDTI - just released in Germany - would not embarrass itself against a hot hatch in a straight line race.
Yet as its engine label suggests, it is fuelled by diesel and, according to GM, is even capable of sipping just 4.9 litres per 100km on the (albeit unrealistic) combined cycle - equating to an emissions figure of just 129g/km.
Still, its consumption is likely to be surprisingly good for a car capable of a top speed of 226km/h - making it the fastest diesel Astra ever.
The engine has two turbochargers and two intercoolers, with the smaller of the turbochargers designed to provide quick, lag-free performance off the mark. In fact, the driver has access to at least 320Nm from as low as 1250rpm.
But the mid-range is where the real blowing happens, with both turbochargers operating together before the larger one takes over from around 3000rpm.
The engine will be available with the GTC, five-door and Sports Tourer wagon body styles and to befit their performance potential these models boast a more aggressive exterior appearance.
Inside, JetBlack coloured fabrics or leather are combined with Magic Red in the seat edges. The BiTurbo models also get a flat-bottom leather steering wheel.
