Honda's third-generation Fit (Jazz to us) - just unveiled in Japan - continues to offer the same practical formula that made its predecessors so popular, only this time there's a bit more attitude in the design.
Its tall-standing, cab-forward proportions remain similar in the quest to offer more interior space than its rivals and the first batch of pictures show that Honda's upward-folding 'Magic' back seats have been retained.
As with the current model, the new Jazz offers the choice between two conventional 16-valve petrol engines - a 1.3-litre and 1.5-litre i-VTEC - as well as a 'Sport' hybrid.
The latter mates a 1.5-litre Atkinson cycle engine to a lithium ion battery and a seven-speed dual-clutch (i-DCD) gearbox. Other advances include an electric servo braking system that increases regenerative efficiency and a fully-electric compressor that reduces engine load.
No output figures have been released as yet, but the hybrid is said to sip 35 percent less fuel than the IMA system fitted to the current Jazz, which should mean a claimed consumption figure of just under three litres per 100km.
Unlike the current Jazz Hybrid, the new system also allows the car to drive for short distances in electric-only mode, although it'll use a combination of petrol and electricity under most circumstances.
We're currently awaiting word from Honda South Africa on when the new Jazz will reach our shores.
