Johannesburg – President Jacob Zuma on Wednesday sent a message of condolence to Myanmar, where a landslide at the weekend left more than 100 people dead.
A 60-metre-high mountain of earth and waste came down on makeshift huts, while people slept in their huts. The sludge buried the huts.
On Monday authorities began retrieving the bodies, with media reports saying that more than a hundred people had been reported missing.
The Presidency said in a statement that Zuma “expressed his condolences to the Government and people of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar”.
The devastating landslide occurred near a jade mine, north of the country at the weekend.
“Our thoughts are with the people of Myanmar in the aftermath of the landslide disaster at the Kachin Jade Mine,” said Zuma.
“On behalf of the Government and people of South Africa, I send my deepest condolences to the Government of Myanmar and to everyone affected, particularly to the families and friends of those killed, injured and still missing.”
