Durban – As part of DKMS Africa’s annual Sunflower Day campaign, they unveiled their Wall of Hope memorial wall on Thursday at the Berea Centre.
DKMS is an international, non-profit organisation dedicated to the fight against blood cancer and blood disorders.
DKMS Africa painted the mural in Berea Centre in Durban to raise awareness and to commemorate the children who have lost their lives to blood cancer and other blood disorders including little Naledi Senamela.
Over 500 children have died from blood related illnesses since 2020, the organisation said.
Naledi, who had dreams of one day becoming a doctor, was diagnosed with Leukaemia in May 2020 after experiencing severe body aches, lack of appetite and fatigue. She unfortunately lost her battle with blood cancer in June 2021.
Nabiella De Beer, communications manager at DKMS Africa says the wall also represents hope for the children who are still suffering and serves as a reminder to encourage South Africans to help provide these children with a second chance at life by registering to become blood stem cell donors.
“This activation forms part of the non-profit organisation’s annual Sunflower Day campaign that aims to raise funds and create awareness for blood cancer patients, through the sale of the Tubes of Hope (TOPE) at Pick ‘n Pay stores nationwide,” she said.
