DURBAN - KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC Kwazi Mshengu showered praise on the girls’ soccer team from Edendale Technical High School for their efforts in reaching the African Championship finals, saying they had done both the province and the country proud.
He said this as preparations were being made to welcome the team at King Shaka International Airport this afternoon from their trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The team from Edendale in Pietermaritzburg had been participating in a tournament that took place in Kinshasa at the weekend.
The Pan African Schools Championship games were played by schools' teams from six African countries namely: Democratic Republic of Congo, Morocco, South Africa, Senegal, Benin, and Ethiopia.
After a series of great performances by the Edendale team (South Africa), they claimed the number two spot and received silver medals. Morocco beat them 1-0 in the finals.
“As we celebrate the team’s success in the tournament, we are also proud to announce that five players have been called up to the national Team’s Under-17 squad to represent South Africa,” said the MEC ahead of the team’s arrival.
The tournament was attended by football’s top brass, including Fifa president Gianni Infantino, South African Football Association president Danny Jordaan and Sports and Recreation deputy minister Nomacawe Mafu.
Infantino had reportedly been impressed with the standard of football at the tournament and said he hoped the tournament would continue for years to come.
